The Museum of natural history of Bordeaux – Science and nature propose a worshop about all babies for nusery’s, primary’s children. The Museum comes to you developpe several topics about nature and animals.

Nursery and primary to Year 2

Young children seem especially fascinated by baby animals. They tend to identify with and are drawn to other ‘babies’, from kittens, young wild boars, baby elephants and chicks to tadpoles, alevin and caterpillars...

Their minds are filled with questions. Do offspring resemble their parents a little, a lot or not at all?

What happens in mummy's tummy for nine months? What happens in a hen's egg for 21 days? How long does it take to produce a baby elephant or a young mouse?

Which animals lay eggs and which animals give birth to fully formed young? What are the biggest and the heaviest babies?

What do babies know how to do? Not all babies have the same aptitudes at birth, some need help longer than others to eat, walk, fly, swim, hunt, sing, speak and so on.

The workshops answers children’s questions while inviting them to observe stuffed animals and illustrations. The workshop ends with a game of animal family bingo.

Workshop aims:

  • Learn where babies come from
  • Broach the subject of growth
  • Assess the behaviour of babies and their parents after birth
  • Identify similarities and differences between young and adults, males and females
  • Learn some new words (name the father, mother and young of different animal families)
  • Listen to a story
  • Differentiate between sizes (small, medium, large)
  • Learn how to use children’s reference books

During the workshop, the facilitator will present a slideshow and a selection of the Museum of Bordeaux collections including a host of stuffed specimens. Children will also get to work with learning resources specially devised or assembled for the session.
