The Collections Conservation Centre (CCC)

Afin de stocker son million de spécimens, le Muséum d'histoire naturelle de Bordeaux a fait construire un centre de conservation des collections qui reçoit dans les meilleures conditions les spécimens et objets des collections.

This building was built to house the million specimens in the Museum of Bordeaux collection. The Collections Conservation Centre (CCC) is much more than a storeroom of mobile shelving, it is a vibrant workplace where various conservation professions are carried out. As such it is a real tool for managing, studying and conserving the collections, which has been operational since June 2011.

The 1,000 m² of space are built on one level over an underfloor space, providing:

  • Storage, using fixed and mobile shelving
  • Conservation, with a controlled climate (temperature and humidity), a quarantine and fumigation room, and a cold room, for treating all the collections preventively against parasites
  • Service duties (transit, packing, unpacking, preparation), carried out thanks to a unloading bay that provides an airlock, a packaging room and a laboratory
  • Operations: inventory, photography, consultation (receiving researchers and students), occasional limited group tours (meetings scheduled or for projects).

The various collections that were exhibited in the Museum before it was renovated were transferred, processed, unpacked, examined and photographed again (condition reports) and ultimately stored in their dedicated space during a huge collections project from 2009 to 2011.

Since it reopened, the Museum of Bordeaux presents around 3,700 specimens from its collections to the public in the permanent exhibition Nature seen by Humans whereas the others are displayed when semi-permanent or temporary exhibitions are held, or reserved for specialist consultation.

Specimens of the Collections Conservation Centre

All of the shelving in the Collections Conservation Centre houses the collections not on display, with around a million specimens.

The collections are distributed in rooms according to their conservation requirements, but also the nature of the collections: taxidermy, tanned hides, pieces of bone and osteological montages, specimens in fluid, shells, fossils, rocks and minerals. Mouldings, models and reconstitutions join these.

Drawers, moveable partitions and other storage systems allow the these collections to be organised and stored. Let’s explore the Collections Conservation Centre with a few sets of shelves.
