The Museum of Bordeaux has opened its doors after a long process of renovation and extension. What were the key phases of this epic project in the heart of Bordeaux? What different trades were called upon to renovate the natural history museum? Who redesigned the building? Why did the Museum of Bordeaux need to be made compliant? What are the new features? Why did the Museum of Bordeaux close its doors for 10 years?

The Construction work! exhibition takes visitors behind the scenes of this epic project and answers all your questions about the renovation and extension of the Museum of Bordeaux. From the choice of materials to the building regulations and the key directions set out in the design brief, the exhibition highlights how the teams squared the circle of resolving the many and often contradictory constraints.

In fact, the architectural ingenuity had to balance the importance of preserving heritage with the need to design a contemporary museum, meet conservation requirements and manage energy consumption in the Hôtel de Lisleferme, a listed building set in a ‘remarkable’ garden.

Each trade brought its own area of expertise to create a building that was fully compliant and accessible to all. During the course of the three projects (exhibitions building, staff offices and the collections conservation centre), the museum teams completed each stage of the works plan and guided the contracting companies. They also moved and restored the specimens, devised a programme right through to the re-opening, and continue to keep you informed on the key stages of this vast renovation-extension project. Come and discover the new features of the Museum of Bordeaux and its Construction work! exhibition.
