If you ask participants to call out names of animals, then mammals, such as dogs, horses, dolphins and so forth, are likely to be the most popular, perhaps accompanied by the odd pet bird or tortoise. Seldom will you hear mollusc, oyster or whelk!
The ‘Shells’ workshop takes participants on a tour of discovery of the mysterious creature once hiding inside the shells we find empty on the beach. What’s the proper name for a shellfish? Did you say mollusc? Do they always live in the sea? What is the purpose of the shell and how does it grow?
The workshop explores the characteristics of these shell-inhabiting animals and opens up a world rich in shapes, colours, feeding strategies, habitats and more. Scientists group molluscs into several classes. This workshop particularly focuses on gastropods and bivalves. Through the session, the group will also hear lots of fascinating scientific anecdotes such as why do we hear the sea when we hold a shell to our ear? And why does the hermit crab make another shell its home?
Workshop aims:
- Characterise shellfish among molluscs
- Learn more about the behaviour of shellfish
- Learn about the diversity of shellfish
- Observe and learn by handling real specimens
During the workshop, the facilitator will present a selection of shells from the Museum of Bordeaux collections. Participants will also be introduced to learning resources specially devised for the workshop.
